The short answer

F1 on an Ideal Logic means system water pressure has dropped below the range the boiler needs. Ideal advises topping up to between 1 and 1.5 bar cold using the filling loop. If the pressure then holds, nothing is wrong. If it falls again within days, water is escaping somewhere.

An Ideal Logic showing F1 has not broken down. It is telling you the sealed heating circuit no longer holds enough water to run as it should. The job in front of you is a two-minute top-up, but the real question sits behind it: is the water going somewhere?

What the Ideal Logic F1 fault code means

A sealed central heating system is a closed loop. The same water travels round and round under a set pressure, and that pressure is what keeps the circuit full, holds air out at the joints and lets the pump do its job. When it falls below what the appliance needs, the boiler flags F1 rather than run short of water.

Ideal lists F1 as low water pressure in both its Logic Combi troubleshooting guide and its published fault code FAQ, which covers displays showing it as a flashing F and 1. In each, the instruction is the same: check the gauge reads between 1 and 1.5 bar, and top up if it does not.

The point at which the boiler actually stops is model dependent. Ideal’s user guide for the Logic System 15, 18, 24 and 30 states the boiler will not operate once pressure has reduced to less than 0.3 bar, and other Logic models set it elsewhere, so the figure in your own manual is the one that counts. Typical cold system pressure sits around 1 to 1.5 bar.

Ideal Logic F1 on a Logic, Logic+, Logic Max or Logic System

The code means the same across the Logic family. On a Logic Combi, Logic+, Logic Max or Logic System, F1 is a low pressure warning about the sealed heating circuit. What varies is where the filling loop and gauge sit.

What F1 is not, and who to call instead

Two digits on a small display in a dark cupboard are easy to misread, so rule out the neighbouring codes. If your boiler will not fire, locks out on ignition or reports a fan fault, that is a different trade’s job.

Under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, work on a gas appliance must be carried out by someone competent, and any business doing it must be on the Gas Safe Register. Ideal’s own user guide adds that the appliance must not be operated without the casing correctly fitted, and that its sealed components must not be tampered with. Leak detection sits outside all that: the pipework, floors, walls and ground. We do not repair boilers or service heating systems, so a boiler that refuses to light is not a job for us.

If you can smell gas, stop reading and act. Leave the property, avoid switches and naked flames, and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999. Leak detection firms do not attend gas emergencies.

How to repressurise an Ideal Logic safely

Topping up through the filling loop is a normal homeowner task, provided the loop is accessible and you follow the instructions for your model. It uses controls fitted outside the casing, which is why it sits on the householder side of the line.

  1. Turn the heating off at the programmer or thermostat and let the system cool. A hot system reads high, so you would under-fill it.
  2. Find the filling loop. Many Logic models have an integral loop under the boiler with a pair of blue levers, while others use a silver braided hose on the heating pipes. Your manual shows which yours has.
  3. Open the valves slowly, one at a time, until you hear water moving.
  4. Watch the pressure gauge, not the clock. Stop as soon as the needle reaches the range Ideal gives for your appliance.
  5. Close both valves fully and check the gauge has settled where you left it.
  6. Turn the heating back on and watch the display.

Whether the code clears itself depends on the model. On some Logic boilers it goes as soon as pressure is in range. On others Ideal makes a reset part of the procedure: its Logic System user guide has you turn the mode control knob to reset and immediately back again. Check your own manual. Where the line sits: using the filling loop is fine. Removing the boiler casing is not. Anything inside the appliance, including the expansion vessel, pressure sensor and pressure relief valve, is work for a Gas Safe registered engineer.

The test that matters: does the pressure hold?

This is the part most fault code pages skip, and it decides whether you have anything to worry about. Once you have repressurised, note the gauge reading and the date, then check it every few days.

A sealed heating system does not consume water. If pressure sits where you left it for weeks, the loss was a one-off and there is nothing to find. That happens after bleeding radiators, after a service or a drain-down, or because the system has slowly shed trapped air. If the needle drifts down again and you are back at F1 within days or weeks, water is leaving a circuit that is supposed to be closed.

The middle two rows are the ones people confuse. A modest rise while the heating runs and a fall back as it cools is normal, and Ideal puts that swing at roughly half a bar. A failed vessel or worn relief valve pushes it much further and can dump water out of the discharge pipe outside. A hidden leak puts the same water into the building. Where the water goes when there is nothing to see

When a system loses pressure with no puddle to show for it, the water is either drying as fast as it appears or soaking into a floor, a wall or the ground below. Ideal’s own advice lists leaks in pipework and around radiators, a failed expansion vessel, a damaged pressure relief valve and diluted inhibitor, and says the outlet pipe on the outside wall behind the boiler should be dry in normal operation.

The ones that hide well:

  • A weeping radiator valve or compression joint that drips into carpet or underlay and never looks wet.
  • Pinholes in copper pipe buried in a screed floor or under floorboards, often at a bend or a joint.
  • Corrosion at the tails of a heated towel rail, where any moisture reads as ordinary bathroom damp.
  • Underfloor heating pipework, where a small loss warms and dries the slab around it.
  • Pipework in an unheated void, a loft or a crawl space nobody has looked at in years.

The classic version is a central heating pipe leaking under the floor: pressure falling every few days, a faintly warm patch underfoot, and no way of knowing which pipe run is at fault without lifting half a room. Non-invasive central heating leak detection answers that first. Thermal imaging picks up the temperature differences a warm leak leaves at the floor surface, acoustic equipment listens for escaping water, and tracer gas, an inert 5% hydrogen and 95% nitrogen mix, shows at the surface on a probe.

There is an insurance angle too. Confused.com says trace and access cover pays to find the leak, reach it and make good the damage caused by the search, but not the repair itself, and that policies tend to cover up to around £5,000, though every policy varies. Insurers commonly ask for a written report from whoever found it.

Pressure faults in Cornwall and Devon homes

Housing stock down here makes hidden heating leaks harder to spot. Thick cob and rubble-filled stone walls hold moisture without much showing on the surface, and the extensions we get called to are often built over screeded floors with the pipework buried in them. Barn conversions and farmhouses run long pipe routes through cold voids, where a weep can drip for months into stone or earth.

Holiday lets and second homes add their own version. A property standing empty between bookings loses pressure quietly for weeks, and F1 is often the first thing a guest or changeover cleaner reports. We see it most in the first cold fortnight of autumn, when systems idle since spring are asked to work again.

Yes. If the gauge sits in the normal range and F1 still shows, the pressure sensor or the gauge itself may be at fault rather than the water level. That is a boiler diagnosis for a Gas Safe registered engineer, not a leak search.

Does an F1 fault mean I need a leak detection company?
